It is the Mission of the Yorkshire Garland Group to make Yorkshire’s Folk Song Heritage as widely and as readily available to the General Public as current technology and copyright considerations permit, and at no charge.
Over 80 songs (so far!) native to or sung for generations in Yorkshire, to play and download for free. Also explore their history, lyrics, scores and much more.
Here we keep you posted on how your website is progressing. Today you’re in the Phase 1 Website of over 80 songs and variants. Your comments, corrections and suggestions for additional songs will be greatly appreciated. Hit ‘Advise us’ on the top toolbar for general comments, ‘Contact us’ for specific queries, suggestions or corrections, or ‘Join us’ to participate in our work as a volunteer. We do take notice of your comments : thanks to your input the ABC scores are now in plain text ABC format and ‘The Tailor’s Britches’ score has been corrected.
Standing left to right: Bill Sowerby, John Greaves, Mark Ellison and Jim Potter (Volunteers);. Steve Gardham (Chairman), Mike Parsey (Secretary). Kneeling: Ray Black (Publicity), Ray Padgett (Treasurer).
We thank the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Local Heritage Initiative for their support.
Four of our members have been taking Yorkshire Folk Music into schools over the past year. We have also been involved in performances of Yorkshire song in the wider community. Our main outreach activity has been running Yorkshire Garland workshops and concerts at festivals around the county and some further afield. Click here to access a video sample of our presence at last year’s Whitby Folk festival. We are already booked to appear at many of this year’s festivals and some folk clubs. Involvement in schools and the wider community is also set to continue
Last September The Group held their Launch Concert at the National Centre for early Music in York. With performances from 10 well known Yorkshire folk singers and with The Watersons Family topping the Bill this was truly a day to remember. Click here for a slideshow featuring many of the performers, whom you can scroll using the central controls on the slideshow screen.
